Everyday decisions / Reported August 2026

It helped for months. Then the crop died.

A farmer in China reportedly lost nearly 25 acres of sesame after following an AI chatbot’s weed-control advice.

What happened

A farmer identified as Wu in Chuzhou, China, had grown to trust an AI app after months of useful answers. Reporting describes him applying its weed- and pest-control recommendation across his sesame field without checking with an agricultural specialist. By the following day, seedlings were dying along with the weeds. The reported affected area was 150 mu, approximately 25 acres.

Source notes

The report draws on CTWANT and the farmer’s interview. The chatbot is unidentified, and no independent agricultural investigation is cited.

What went wrong

Past useful answers made this new recommendation feel trustworthy. The missing check was whether it applied to this crop and field before using it widely.

What to notice and test

Before acting on specialist advice, check the relevant official guidance and ask someone qualified. A confident answer cannot account for conditions it has not established.

Try it together

Think of an everyday suggestion, such as what to pack for a picnic. Name one fact you would check before following it. Keep farming chemicals and other hazardous decisions with qualified adults.
